Currently Assam Petrochemicals Ltd, Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers (GEFC), Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited and Deepak Fertilizers make methanol and its capacity is 3 million tonnes annually.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said in a program that the previous government did not take seriously the process of mixing ethanol in petrol, which could save better in petroleum import. The Prime Minister has said that now when this biomass production is on the rise, it can be used to reduce the cost of petrol. Ethanol production will rise 3 times in 5 years to 540 million liters in 4 years. Petrol allowance can save up to Rs 12,000 crore due to this. The Prime Minister has said that he plans to set up 12 biofuels refinery by investing Rs 10,000 crore in the country. He said that the government will achieve 10 percent ethanol mixing in petrol by 2022 and it is going to increase it to 20 percent by 2030. This will create employment opportunities for every refinery 1000-1500 people.
