Reliance Jio since its launch in 2016 has been offering free and unlimited voice calling for its subscribers. While Jio’s freebies in 4G data have been a massive hit, the free calling service has been one of the key reasons for the company’s success. After Jio announced that voice calling in the network will always be free of cost, other incumbents like Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea have been trying to come up with their own offers. Meanwhile, Jio has not updated its terms and conditions regarding the voice calling service. Now, there is a cap of 300 minutes on voice calls per day.

Reliance Jio’s popular recharge vouchers are priced at Rs 149, Rs 309, Rs 349, Rs 399, and Rs 509. If you have bought some of these recharge plans, you would have noticed that Jio offers free voice calling on its network, even for STD calls. However, now there is a limit applied on the time you can talk on the network. The cap has been set at 300 minutes per day, that means 5 hours daily. It should be noted that the limit is applicable only to those, who are found to be ‘misusing’ the service.

Reliance Jio wants to prevent the misuse of its network. This essentially means that Jio aims to prevent the use of its free calling service by telemarketers for their own commercial use. Jio has informed that the daily cap has been present on the deal, for a long time now. Jio, on its website, says: “This Plan is intended only for personal use of included services. RJIL reserves the right to discontinue the free Voice benefits offered as part of this Plan in case of misuse/ fraudulent use/ unauthorised telemarketing and commercial use.” This means, that if you start using your Jio SIM to sell products by calling random numbers (and it exceeds 300mins/day), Jio may stop your service.

Mukesh Ambani, at the Reliance annual general meeting (AGM), had said that Jio users had made over 2.5 billion minutes of voice and video calls each day. Reliance in its terms and conditions page, clearly mentions that the daily cap on the service has been put only for curbing any kind of misuse. This is in line with Jio announcing new rules for the Jio Phone.
